Hello,
We have a very busy calendar coming up, and we hope you’ll be able to join us at one of the following events!
There’s still time to sign up for the launch of our Employer Consultation on Monday 26th September. The consultation will be a hugely important survey of exactly what works (and what doesn’t!) in improving social mobility within organisations, so don’t miss your chance to come along and hear more about how to get involved.
Following the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we unfortunately had to reschedule ‘In Conversation with I. Stephanie Boyce’, in line with government mourning guidance. We now have a new date for this event, and we hope you’ll be able to join us on 11th October, whether you were originally able to attend last week or not.
Finally, we’re pleased to announce the date of our October masterclass, ‘Mentoring as a tool to support social mobility’, which will be held at 12pm on Thursday 27th October. You can find more details below.
Thanks for reading,
The SMC Employers Team

Join us at the launch of our new Employer Consultation
There’s still time to register to attend the launch of our new Employers Consultation next week! Join us at 12.30pm on Monday 26th September for a 30 minute online introduction to the consultation with our Director, John Craven, and find out how you can take part.
We want to understand what activities and interventions employers are finding most effective in improving social mobility within their organisations and communities. We’ll be asking employers to fill in a short, confidential, online response by the end of October, and will use the information provided to publish a “What Works” Report later this year, working closely with a newly established Employers Advisory Group comprising 10-12 members across different sectors who have responded to the consultation.
UPDATE: You can take part in the consultation by completing this form.
Upcoming events:
The importance of culture and leadership – in conversation with I. Stephanie Boyce, President of the Law Society
New date: Tuesday 11th October, 1pm
Following the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we unfortunately had to reschedule our September masterclass, in line with government mourning guidance
However, we hope that you will now be able to join us on Tuesday 11th October, 1-2pm, as we discuss with I. Stephanie Boyce, President of the Law Society, the importance of culture and leadership in supporting social mobility within an organisation.
We’ll be discussing how organisations can develop a culture that fosters inclusion; the responsibility of those across all levels of an organisation; as well as what challenges organisations face and how they might overcome them.
Stephanie will be sharing insights from her engagement with a wide array of organisations from across many sectors through her role as President of the Law Society for England and Wales, as a member of the Socio-Economic Diversity Taskforce, and through her experience in industry.
Register now to secure your place at our ‘Culture’ masterclass.
Please note: If you previously registered for this event, your registration will still be valid – just don’t forget to update it in your calendar.
Mentoring as a tool to support social mobility
Thursday 27th October, 12pm
Join us as we celebrate National Mentoring Day (27th October) with our October employers’ masterclass, exploring the importance of mentoring in supporting workplace progression and social mobility.
We’ll be discussing how mentoring programmes, whatever the scale, create a mutually beneficial relationship between a mentor and a mentee, and can bring as much value to your organisation as they can to an individual.
We’ll be joined by Mercy Abel, host of gen z careers podcast, ‘audacity of we’ and a mentee from the Creative Mentor Network programme, as well as a mentor from Moving Ahead’s Mission INCLUDE programme who will share their perspectives on the benefits of mentoring schemes. We’ll also be speaking to Eddie Fletcher, Head of Social Mobility for the Ministry of Justice People Group, about what to consider when setting up a mentoring programme and how to measure success.
Register now to attend our ‘Mentoring’ masterclass.
Coming up next week
Next week, to coincide with National Inclusion Week, we are pleased to be publishing our new employers toolkit: The Building Blocks: An employer’s guide to social mobility in the workplace. This new toolkit is designed as a simple guide to help businesses and organisations of all sizes, up and down the country, access a wealth of untapped talent and kickstart their socio-economic diversity strategy. The guide includes the ‘building block’ interventions, for employers starting out on their social mobility journey, who may not be ready to take forward all the wider recommendations in our other toolkits.
