Social Mobility Commission Privacy Notice
The Social Mobility Commission is a Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Cabinet Office. This policy sets out how The Social Mobility Commission (‘the Company’ ‘We’ ‘us’) uses and protects any information that you give us when attending an event or signing up to our mailing list.
We are committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. This Privacy Policy contains information about collecting users’ Personal Data and the manner of its processing. We respect the right to privacy of all users who communicate with us and take reasonable steps to ensure you are familiar with the manner in which data provided is processed.
The type of personal information we collect
We currently collect and process the following information:
- Name
- Email address
- Telephone number
- Information about the organisation you work for and your role
- Health information relating to attending events (such as reasonable adjustments or dietary requirements)
- Information you provide in response to surveys.
How we get your personal information and why we collect it
Most of the personal information we process is provided to us directly by you for one of the following reasons:
- Send email and mailouts giving updates on the Social Mobility Commission
- Send you research and event information
- Gather feedback to improve our events
- Provide you with information about the Social Mobility Commission
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the lawful bases we rely on for processing this information are:
- Your consent.

(b) If we are not processing on a basis of consent, then we need to process your personal data to perform a public task.
Sensitive personal data (special category data) is personal data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership, and the processing of genetic data, biometric data for the purpose of uniquely identifying a natural person, data concerning health or data concerning a natural person’s sex life or sexual orientation. An additional basis is required when processing sensitive personal data.
When we process your health-related data, for example for reasonable adjustments or dietary requirements, we do so on a basis of explicit consent (art. 9(2)(a) UK GDPR)
How we store your personal information
Your information is securely stored on our Customer Relationship Management Tool, Freshworks, which supports the Social Mobility Commission in organising, recording, and storing stakeholder data so we can communicate with our stakeholders through information, research, and events.
The Social Mobility Commission will, at least every 2 years, ask stakeholders to update their subscription preferences. Any mailouts sent out via Customer Relationship Management will have the option for individuals to unsubscribe in the footer.
Any information gathered through event or survey sign-ups will be held for 6 months.
Your data protection rights
Under data protection law, you have rights, including:
- Your right of access – You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information.
- Your right to rectification – You have the right to ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.
- Your right to erasure – You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances.
- Your right to restriction of processing – You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.
- Your right to object to processing – You have the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.
- Your right to data portability – You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.
- Your right to withdraw consent – Where data is processed on the basis of consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.
You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.
